We started in September 1984 in the enclosed back porch of my Roscoe Street apartment, a cramped 6’ x 10’ space. To say that equipment was minimal would be an understatement. The resulting new products were equally unimpressive.
We soon grew into a proper office space with a vault to store our prototypes, a conference room, a large shop, front office, the works.
We were growing now, having hired a model maker, artist, and two designers. Our game Fireball Island was a hit and was to be followed by many more in the succeeding years, including the “Luminator Light up Foam Football” and sports line, an industry first; “Baby Sip-'n-Slurp,” “VacMan,” the first toy industry application of ‘vacuumatic’ technology, and many others.
We soon moved to a lovely little 900 square foot office on Sunnyside and Ravenswood, nestled between the EL tracks and the Illinois Central tracks, on one of Chicago’s remaining brick surface roads. It was a quiet industrial section in the heart of the city.
By 1992, we bought and renovated our own building at 4111 N. Rockwell St., across the street from the boat yard and the Chicago River. The move provided 3500 square feet of offices, conference and showrooms. We now had a large, open, sunlight-filled studio workspace filled with machinery and equipment for building all manner of prototypes, toys for reference, drawers of motors, boxes of mechanisms, gears, magnets and more.
In 2007, we decided that once again, we had outgrown our space. We hired architects, and set out to design an award-winning building and work space that would inspire and motivate our team to do the very best and most innovative work possible. It is meant to be a ‘Wow’ and breathtaking experience for everyone who visits, and everyone who works with us.
As I approach the mid-point in my career, my personal goal is that the new building will inspire me to do the best work of my professional life. The new doors of Lund and Company Invention, L.L.C., located at 344 Lathrop Avenue in River Forest, IL, officially opened on June 20th, 2008.
Thank you for your interest and for taking the time to read a bit about how we began, and where we are today. God willing, through our work we may one day come to enrich your life in some small way.
What’s the future for our team at Lund and Company Invention, L.L.C.? Can’t say for sure, but I like what we’re doing and the new directions we are exploring. That’s a big part of what makes what we do so much fun and exciting. Today, we are better than ever before, and I have personally rededicated myself to our work, and to doing the best work of my life in the decades to come. I believe strongly that this commitment and renewal will be contagious!
